The short answer
The Costa del Sol sells itself on sand, but its best days out are in the mountains that crowd the coast. We curate three that are worth a day off the beach, and they suit different people. The Nerja caves and Frigiliana day is the comfortable one, and the right choice for mixed ages and mixed mobility. The Caminito del Rey is the memorable one, and the one to book first because it is the only thing on this coast with a hard capacity limit. The Maro cliffs kayak is the active one, and the best morning on the water anywhere on this stretch of coast.
If you can do two, do the Caminito and one of the others on separate days. If you can do only one, the answer depends on who is travelling with you, and we explain how to choose below.
Three days that are not beach days
All three of these leave from the Malaga end of the coast or meet an hour east of it, and none needs a rental car. That matters: the coast road is slow in summer, parking in the white villages is scarce, and the logistics of the Caminito in particular are harder than the walk itself. Two of the three are organized coach days; the kayak meets in Nerja and leaves the getting there to you.
Between them they cover the three things the coast does best away from the beach: the limestone underneath it, the villages above it, and the cliffs where the mountains meet the sea.

Nerja Caves, Nerja and Frigiliana Day Tour
The vast Nerja cave system, the Balcón de Europa, and Frigiliana's Moorish lanes in one nine-hour day. The strongest cave-and-white-village combination from Málaga.
This nine-hour day stacks three stops. The Nerja caves are the anchor: a cavern system on a cathedral scale, cool all year at about 19 degrees inside, with a lot of stairs on the visitor route. Then Nerja town and the Balcon de Europa viewpoint over the Mediterranean. Then Frigiliana, a few kilometres inland, whose Moorish upper quarter is a maze of whitewash, steps and bougainvillea.
It holds 4.7 across 2,773 reviews, from about USD 79. The trade is the one every coach day makes: about an hour in each place beyond the caves, so Frigiliana works as a taster rather than a visit. If the village is the part that draws you, know that going in.

A boardwalk pinned a hundred metres up the walls of the Guadalhorce gorge, once notorious and now safely rebuilt. The walk itself is about 7.7 kilometres and mostly flat. The difficulty is everything around it: the route is linear, so you finish far from where you start, and timed entries sell out. Two absolute limits. Children under eight are not admitted. And real vertigo will ruin the day, because the exposure is constant and there is no exit partway. In summer, take the earliest departure you can get; the gorge has almost no shade.

The Maro cliffs by kayak: the active one

East of Nerja the mountains fall straight into the sea along the protected Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs, and a kayak is the way to see them. This guided paddle of about two and a half hours runs the cliff line to the Maro waterfall, which drops directly into the sea, with snorkel stops and the guide photographing the group on the way. 4.7 across 3,344 paddlers, from about USD 40, the least expensive of the three by a distance.
It is a real paddle, in sit-on-top doubles that forgive beginners but still need shoulders. Sea state matters more than fitness: mornings are usually calm and afternoons can chop up, so book an early slot. If you only have one day
With children under eight, grandparents, or anyone who dislikes heights: Nerja and Frigiliana. It is the only one of the three every member of a mixed group can do.
For reasonably fit adults who want the day they will talk about: the Caminito. It is the more memorable day, and the harder one to get into, so decide early.
If you would rather move than be driven: the kayak, and spend the rest of the day in Nerja, which is the natural base for it anyway.
A half day in Malaga itself

Fitting them into a week
Book the Caminito first and build around it, because it is the one fixed point. Keep the kayak and the caves on separate days: both involve Nerja, but a morning of paddling followed by a nine-hour coach day is too much, and the kayak runs best on a calm early slot you cannot always choose in advance. A beach day between two excursion days is not wasted time on this coast; it is the rhythm the place is built for.
